This course is an introduction to the Anglophone debates on the Marxist theory of history, class structure, and ideology. The Analytical Marxist tradition is distinct for its style, its attempts to expose and justify assumptions, and its willingness to innovate when it finds its own theories to be wanting. Therefore, it has had the great virtue of helping a whole generation of social scientists and philosophers to begin to reconstruct historical materialism as a viable research program. We’ll start with Marx and progress from GA Cohen’s defense of orthodox historical materialism to subsequent critiques of his technological determinism and functionalism. We’ll conclude by exploring the concept of ideology and its relevance to contemporary debates about racial and gender oppression. close
