Comments
In this course we will read passages from the autobiographical work of the famous Egyptian polymath Jalal al-Din al-Suyuti (d. 911/1505), al-tahadduth bi ni’mat allah (Speaking of God’s Bounty). We will focus on the following questions: How does al-Suyuti narrate his life? What does he include, and what does he leave out? What does the work tell us about the ethical persona that he aimed to cultivate? And what can we learn from this work about the scholarly world of Mamluk Cairo? close
