Comments
The course is an introduction to historical and comparative linguistics, as applied to the Semitic languages.
Students will be introduced to the study of: (i) the description of the Semitic languages and their linguistic features; (ii) the comparison of these languages, in order to analyze the common characteristics.
After a general introduction to Semitic languages (geographical distribution, historical aspects, linguistic features, and brief outline of texts), the course will deal with phonology, morphology, and syntax, also addressing issues such as differences and commonalities of languages, typology and genetic relationship, as well as the application of these to the study of Semitic languages.
Reading and working material, such as academic articles dealing with the major language groups of Semitic and their linguistic features, will be provided during the course.
