Comments

Simone de Beauvoir famously claimed that women are made, not born. The same could be said for all people – we become who we are through learning and socialization. This includes everything from formalized instruction in schools and universities to embodied and situated learning of crafts and other productive activities to culturally acceptable forms of behavior. How did learning work in the past? Can we identify places and processes of learning? Were the dynamics of teaching and learning similar to those we know today; if not, how did they differ? In this course we will draw on literature on learning and socialization in archaeology and related disciplines in order to examine specific cases in the past, both in western Asia and in other geographical contexts. close
