Proseminar
WiSe 21/22: Urban Development Discourse - Neoliberal Urbanism in Sub-Saharan Africa
Sara Dehkordi
Comments
This seminar will focus on the relations of neoliberal urbanism with the colonial project and on various classed, raced, and gendered urban spaces in the African continent. It will put different African city spaces in conversation with cities in other parts of the world and ask the question of the international dimensions of political and economic violence linked with urban development. The main questions are, how is it possible to rethink urban space in the face of segregation and unequal access to life? In which ways are international, transnational, and national companies and the political sector forming an Urban Development Discourse that excludes the majority of people from the desired milieu of the market? Students will read texts, watch films, lead discussions and produce their own projects in response to the content of the course. close
