WiSe 22/23: Mixed Methods and Interdisciplinarity in Area Studies
Alexander Libman
Kommentar
The class augments the methods training by focusing on two interrelated areas. First, it discusses the role of interdisciplinarity in social science research, with particular emphasis on area studies. While area studies traditionally see the interdisciplinarity as their main strength, and social sciences also welcome interdisciplinary research, area studies are in disrepute in the social science literature. We will discuss different notions of interdisciplinarity and how they affect area studies approach to societal pheonomena. Second, we address the topic of mixed methods, i.e., combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches, and their advantages and disadvantages. Mixed methods are a highly contested topic in social sciences, and we will look at both their advantages and their costs for the social science research. To pass the class, students will be expected to prepare short (two-page long) summaries for a possible mixed methods research project and present them in class. Schließen
