WiSe 22/23: PS-History of English II: How to Become a Global Language

This seminar will explore the processes that led to English becoming a global language in the last few centuries. To widen the perspective, we will apply a comparison with Latin where appropriate, to investigate sociolinguistic aspects of language spread, linguistic imperialism, language contact and multilingualism as core processes in the acquisition of global language status. Furthermore, we will address the issue of lingua franca use and the development of local and regional varieties. Schließen
