Kommentar
The seminar looks at early medieval stone sculpture from Ireland, Scotland, England and Scandinavia. We will especially focus on high crosses and cross slabs, but we will also consider hogbacks and inscribed stones, analysing both thoroughly researched examples such as Ruthwell Cross and less well-known monuments of – for example – Pictish art. A central aim is gaining an overview of these heterogeneous sculptural traditions in a broader European context, considering historical and artistic contexts and the diversity of objects produced. Why have these monuments often been researched separately? Which aspects and topics have interested researchers recently? Students will be introduced to questions and methods central to early medieval art history (how to deal with a lack of written sources, how close art history and archaeology are, what to ‘do’ with objects we do not understand). Topics include the function of stone crosses within liturgy and landscape, social functions, the biography of monuments, the role of stones as bearers of ornament, figures and text in different scripts and languages, as well as enigmatic symbols. In addition to a close study of specific examples, the seminar will look at Insular art and culture in the context of early medieval visual culture in general, and at the exchange between the Isles, Scandinavia and the Continent.
