WiSe 22/23: Identity politics: histories and theories
Andrei Belibou
Kommentar
In this seminar, we will explore identity politics as a political theory and as a social phenomenon. The first half will trace the history of identity politics and the debates that have formed around it. Starting with a discussion of the theoretical considerations around researching and learning about identity politics, it will continue by discussing its origins within Black feminism and its historical development. This will be completed by engaging with debates about identity politics’ transformative potential, its place within existing power structures, and its relationship to cultural concerns. The second half of the seminar will begin with a closer look at the internal workings of the concept of social identity. On that basis, it will go on to discuss how several social positions within the US have been thought, politicized, and contested as identities. The last session will be a student-led discussion about how the theories of identity politics can help us understand several current transatlantic political debates. Schließen
