Social movements have shaped societies in various ways. Nationalism and independence movements, communism and social democracy, environmentalism, feminism or even fascism came along as social movements and left their imprint on current societies. Social movements are an interesting but challenging object for social research.
The seminar is an introduction to social movement studies. First, we discuss the object itself and the separation of social movements from other but related objects (parties, interest groups, riots). Second, we get to know theories which try to explain the emergence of social movements. In a concluding third part, we want to apply the theories to your cases, i.e. social movements you are (more or less) familiar with.
