In this course, students will learn about the economic aspects of the welfare state. Justifications and issues regarding public spending are the main focus of the lectures. The lecture starts with a brief introduction to the history and development of the welfare state and the different types of welfare states. Afterward, the foundations for public spending are discussed. The rest of the course focuses on specific fields of public expenditure, including social security insurance, inequality concerns, and potential measures to reduce poverty.
The course discusses numerous theoretical models. A strong foundation of mathematical skills is a prerequisite for the course.
