SoSe 16: Political Participation Online in Western and Developing Countries

Scholars from communication studies and political science have explored the capacities of digital media for political participation, communication and activism since the mid-1990s. However, the state of research is still remarkably biased towards western societies, particularly the US and European countries. Knowledge about use and impact of digital technologies in the Global South is scarce, which is a serious shortcoming because digital and particularly mobile media are probably more relevant for these societies than traditional communication media. In this seminar, we will in a first step explore the current state of research on the role of internet and digital media in political participation and communication. Based on our findings, students will in a second step select countries for individual case studies that can contribute to our knowledge of the impact of digital media beyond western states. At the end of the seminar, students will have a well founded knowledge on the political capacities of digital media and improved skills in conducting their own research projects. Schließen
