For all those whose who are interested, there will be 5 supplementary appointments from 7 to 9 p.m., where fictional or documentary movies related to the subject matter of the seminar will be shown. During the last decades, controversial memories of colonialism have gained public visibility across the globe. As representations of the past, these memories are shaped by present perspectives and serve present interests. Various actors deploy them in struggles over identity, politics, and cultural hegemony. Hence, these historical narratives often provide pertinent insights into contemporary postcolonial societies in Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and the Americas.
Although colonialism was in many respects a pan-European project and a historical phenomenon of global dimensions, many people today remember it in nationally framed public spheres or in bilateral discussions between former colonizers and 'their' formerly colonized counter-parts. At the same time, though, tendencies to construct multilateral, transnational memories of colonialism have been present since the historical era of decolonization until today.
In this seminar, we will first develop a basic theoretical understanding of memory and memory politics, and then focus on empirical cases. Here, we will take a closer look on the way colonialism is remembered in France and Portugal and the countries formerly colonized by them. The memorial legacy of German colonialism might provide another example. We may also address the memory of slavery as a colonial practice with an obviously transnational scope. We will look at a wide array of memory media and actors, ranging from state representatives and politicians to war veterans, decolonization refugees, and migrants' associations as well as academics, artists, and journalists

While analyzing the dynamics of nationalized memories, we will also attend to non-national and transnational memory practices; while focusing on comparisons, connections, and conflicts, we will try to think of ways of how to fit our case studies into a global history of colonial memories - a history which today remains unwritten.
