SoSe 16: Refugee Policy in the EU
Natalie Welfens
Kommentar
Lately there was hardly any other political topic, which has caused so much controversy, heated discussions and political mobilisation than refugee policy in the European Union. However, it seems as if the answers to the multiple challenges subsumed under the term ‚refugee crisis’ still remain unclear.
The seminar will map out these challenges, relevant actors, recent political changes and potential solutions. Following the journey of a refugee we will discuss (1) root causes of migration in countries of origin, (2) ways to the EU, (3) border regimes, as well as (4) reception and integration of refugees in the countries of destination. Combining a theoretical with a practical perspective on the different topics, we will also talk to practitioners and discuss potential solutions.
Basic knowledge of key concepts of migration theory is useful but not compulsory. A very brief introduction to key ideas and terms will be provided in the first sessions.
