SoSe 16: Introduction to the Arabic Historical Novel in the Nahda Period

The Nahda period (late 19th and 20th centuries) is known to have been the cultural and literary renaissance or the awakening of the Arab world. Far from being only a cultural process, it also involved social and political change, as it resulted from the encounter with the West and colonialism. On the one hand, it brought the discovery of European literary practices and its literary models, on the other the rediscovery of the Arabic literary heritage. One of the most influential European literary genres was the historical novel. But what kind of influences did this new literature carry? What was the role of translation? What aspects did Arab writers borrow and how did they re-elaborate them in order to create a local Arabic literature? Jurji Zaydan (d. 1914), a Syro-Lebanese writer who migrated to Egypt, was a pioneer of the Arabic historical novel. His prolific literary production, his articles in his journal Al-Hilal, his studies on Arabic literature and language give us an insightful look into this dynamic period. This course offers an overview of the Nahḍa literary movement and a special look at Jurji Zaydan’s historical novels and the role they played in the Arab world, particularly in Egypt. By analyzing some passages of the English translation of one of his novels and comparing it with the Arabic source text, the translation principles of domestication and foreignization will also be examined. close
