Gestaltung, Erprobung und Reflexion einer sprachlichen Lernumgebung im Lehr-Lern-Labor Englisch (LLL) This course enlarges upon selected topics of the Grundkurs (“Introduction to TEFL”) and applies them to classroom practice. Issues such as dealing with heterogeneity and facilitating communicative competence are linked with teaching methodologies, methods, and techniques. The course also covers related practical topics such as lesson planning, feedback, inquiry, and classroom management skills. Students are expected to attend class regularly and to participate actively, which includes the design and preparation of learning materials and lesson plans in and outside of class, as well as the involvement in critical self-reflection discussions as part of the LLL. The topic of the termpaper (“Hausarbeit”) can either be taken from the “Grundkurs”, the first constituent of the “Basismodul”, or preferably from this course, i.e. the “Proseminar”. The paper is to be handed in after successful completion of both module constituents (“Grundkurs & Proseminar”). Focus areas: The course is part of a research project (Qualitätsoffensive Lehrerbildung of the BMBF, project „K2Teach-Know how to teach“). As an actual field-trial, the didactic knowledge gained and skills developed in class can be immediately explored during a so-called „Lehr-Lern-Labor (LLL)“. For that distinctive purpose, pupils from fifth grade are specifically invited to Freie Universität Berlin twice during the span of this course. Participants of this course will thus get the unique chance to create their own learning materials for this specific target group of students. Subsequent to the actual LLL, a guided discussion in small groups will enable participants to thoroughly reflect upon their experiences during the LLL, in order to gain insights into focal features of those processes beneficial to student’s usage of English. Based on these new insights into communication and learning, participants will then receive time in class to review and modify their materials for the occurrence of a second LLL. Literature: Selected literature will be provided by the course instructor C. Klempin and will be made accessible on Blackboard. Course structure: group work, work in reflecting tandem-pairs, hands-on activities, preparing learning materials and speaking tasks for the LLL, mini-lectures, micro teaching units, post-LLL-reflection discussions.
