SoSe 17: PS-Introduction to Cultural Studies: Theatrical Culture in the Age of Shakespeare
David Jefferson Amelang López
Kommentar
Comparing the drama of early modern England is often limited to strictly textual aspects. What is less frequent is to compare them as products of two very unusual and fascinating theatrical cultures. This seminar aims to illustrate the environment in which early modern English and plays were produced; with a specific focus on the capitals city of London, we will explore the social, cultural and political aspects that played a crucial role in the development in one of Europe’s most emblematic literary cultures. We will be looking at how playwrights and actors lived and worked, what the playhouse neighbourhoods and the buildings themselves were like, what it meant to attend a performance in that period and, most importantly, how all this can change the way we read and understand the plays.
