SoSe 17: Masters of Spin: Corporate Communications, PR, and Marketing in American History
Sönke Kunkel
Kommentar
From the Super Bowl to the iPhone – the history of American consumerism would be unthinkable without the concomitant rise of marketing and public relations throughout the twentieth century. But ideas and practices of marketing and corporate communications have also changed considerably ever since modern PR was introduced by Edward Bernays and others a hundred years ago. In this course, we will explore the history of marketing and PR both as an idea and as a set of techniques, and we will discuss the founding texts and concepts in the field. Topics we will cover also include the evolution of corporate design, the (M)ad men of Madison Avenue, and the interrelationships between PR, U.S. public diplomacy, and propaganda.
