Kommentar
This course is designed to provide an overview of theories and research about social stratifica-tion in Western societies. We will examine causes and consequences of social inequality for individuals’ lives as well as the social processes that sustain it. Participants will get acquainted with key concepts and theories of social stratification and inequality as well as social indica-tors used to measure inequality. Social class structure, racial and ethnic inequality, gender inequality, occupational inequality, inequality in the educational system and social mobility in the industrial societies are among the topics that will be covered. The processes, characteris-tics, and consequences of social inequality will be examined in a country-comparative per-spective.
We will pay specific attention to theoretical frameworks, research designs and empirical find-ings on selected issues of social stratification and, especially, its consequences in labor markets. This course will give you tools needed to begin serious work on stratification. A major goal of the readings and discussions in class is to improve your scholarly skills in formal and statisti-cal reasoning.
