Over the past few decades, a great number of social scientists has addressed the world’s seemingly increasing technological, economic, cultural, political and social interconnectedness under the label of ‘globalization‘. This seminar aims at providing an introduction to some of these theories of globalization. We will discuss, among others, the main arguments of modernization theory, the ‘world-systems’ perspective, John W. Meyer’s ‘world polity’ and Samuel P. Huntington’s ‘clash of civilizations’ approach in order to answer the following questions: What is globalization and how can we measure it? What are the causes and effects of globalization? In addition, we will shed some light on Europe’s situation in a globalized world and broach the issue of global governance. Schließen
