SoSe 17: HS-Literature and Media: Text-Image Relations

In the vast area of text-image relations, this class aims at studying literary descriptions that are either of images (transposing an image into a text) or “image-like” (making an object/a text appear as an image). In a first step, we will familiarize with the current state of research by focusing on the techniques of ‘ekphrasis’ (the description of an image) and ‘pictorialism’ (the description of an object as if it were an image). In doing so, we will address the question to what extent the paragone, the idea of a rivalry between the arts or media, can be taken as a fruitful model to conceptualize the relationship between text and image; and we will then ponder whether the description of an image respectively an image-like description is to be considered a predominantly ‘mimetic’ act (representing something already presented elsewhere) or a performative act (creating something seemingly present elsewhere in its own right and with its own means). In a second step, the class will engage in close readings of a broad range of texts, covering poetry, prose fiction as well as drama from the early modern period up to the nineteenth century so as to describe and understand their underlying poetics of text-image relations.
