SoSe 17: Moving Image Art

"Moving image art" is a mouthful. As films and videos have become more prevalent in gallery and museum shows since the early 1990s, the term has nevertheless become more common. In this English-language seminar we will discuss and analyze recent examples of moving image art and situate them in relation to earlier works of avant-garde film and video art from the 1960s and '70s. Do all of these examples of innovation with moving images belong to a single artistic or cinematic tradition? What are the aesthetic and conceptual differences among them? Is moving image art simply an "other cinema" as Raymond Bellour would have it? Or is it better understood as an artistic practice, specific to the art world, and having little to do with the history of, say, avant-garde film? To address these questions, we will turn to the works themselves, viewing and discussing together a selection of films and videos by such artists as Eija Liisa Ahtila, Yael Bartana, Dara Birnbaum, Phil Collins, Valie Export, Omer Fast, Isa Genzken, Khaled Jarrar, and Joan Jonas.
