Description
This course offers students an opportunity to discuss current developments in international law. The programme for most sessions will be decided "on the go" - as world events unfold and in continuous discussion with the students. While the future is notoriously hard to predict, expect the sessions to enable discussions of topics such as the relationship between the Trump administration and international law, Russia's ongoing intervention in the Ukraine conflict or the withdrawal of African states from the International Criminal Court.Special guest lecture on Tuesday, 25 April: In the first session, Professor Erika de Wet (University of Pretoria, South Africa) will give a talk on "Intervention upon Invitation". Her talk will be commented on by Professor Georg Nolte (Humboldt University Berlin, Member of the UN ILC).
Required prior knowledge
Participants should have a basic understanding of public international law. All discussions in the course will be held in English and active participation is encouraged.Readings
To be announced in the class. Participants are encouraged to follow international news outlets such as "The New York Times", "The Economist" and the BBC for the selection of cases and situations to be discussed in the course.Course Type:
