The philosophy of reconciliation informs three debates in practical philosophy: In the field of political philosophy, theories of restorative justice describe justice as a reconciliatory process between deeply divided ethnic or ideological groups; theories of criminal justice define the purpose of punishment in terms of a reconciliation between offender and victim; and in normative ethics, the rationale of reconciliation and forgiveness replace ideas of revenge and retribution. All three debates share the idea that an adequate reaction to a moral wrong implies a forward-looking and responsive restoration of the dignity and agency of those who are wronged; ultimately, reconciliation aims at the healing of relationships and at the restoration of a sense of togetherness. In our seminar, we will explore this alternative view on justice and morality by studying and discussing classic (Butler, Hegel) as well as contemporary texts by Charles Griswold, Martha Nussbaum, Daniel Philpott, John Rawls, Andrew Schaap or Jeremy Waldron.
