The focus of this seminar is the way objects in space - typically, but not necessarily, free-standing sculptures - command aesthetic attention. The readings will be selected to guide us from the general problem of spatial and cultural conditions of commanding or meriting visual attention to more specific questions of the nature of aesthetic attention to objects in real (as opposed to virtual, i.e., pictorial) space and the corresponding problem of configuring the medium and its viewing conditions with respect to the intended attentive behaviour.
