SoSe 18: Media Art: History, Theory, Politics
Eric de Bruyn
Comments
To what extent are art history and media studies separate or, to the contrary, connected fields of research? This seminar will raise the question how, as art historians, we might approach the contemporary field of art practice where former notions of medium specificity no longer apply. What is the function of the art historian in our current (post-)media age? What might we learn in this regard from the disciplines of film studies and media studies? But also to what degree might our research agendas differ? We shall look at both specific historical cases (e.g. avant-garde film, expanded cinema, contemporary artist’s films) as well as discuss key texts on film and media theory (e.g. Walter Benjamin, Guy Debord, Marshall McLuhan, Jonathan Crary.) Whereas the focus will remain on specific media art practices (i.e. projected art within the gallery and museum context), we shall consider how we might situate ‘media art’ in relation to the broader frameworks of film, television or digital culture. In particular, how does media art anticipate or respond to the dominant modes of media critique that have been articulated since the period of the historical avant-garde? close
