SoSe 19: Travelling to the Holy Land after 1291
Thomas Ertl
Kommentar
Christian pilgrims visited the Holy Land before the first crusade 1099 and after the fall of Acre and the end of the Crusader States in 1291. While the vision of a re-conquest of Jerusalem remained vivid after 1291, internal competition between Christian princes made a common crusade impossible. Yet, Christian merchants and pilgrims kept going to the Holy Land for commercial and religious reasons. We may even notice a new wave of pilgrims and pilgrim literature in the 14th and 15th centuries. In the HS we want to study some pilgrim reports and put them into the broader picture of travelling and travel literature in the later middle ages. Schließen
