      SoSe 19: Legacies of Empire
Markus-Michael Müller
Kommentar
In the years after 9/11 the notion of empire reappeared in contemporary political and academic debates, often by equating empire with economically motivated imperialism. In moving beyond narrow economic understandings of empires, this seminar introduces students to the governance logics and historical trajectories of empires as a particular form of transregional geopolitical formations. It provides students with an interdisciplinary perspective of imperial formation processes and adresses the questions if and how our contemporary world order is shaped by the legacies of empires and imperial projects. To this end, key contemporary works on empires and their legacies will be discussed and different cases of imperial rise and decline from the 16th century until the present will be analyzed.
