SoSe 19: Media and advertisement

Advertisement is a relevant subject matter from a media and communication studies’ point of view for several reasons: Advertisement is persuasive communication that is usually of public nature, albeit different from public relations and propaganda, yet with a specific aim to convince recipients. Advertisement is also one of main means of funding within many media organizations’ business models.
As a result, advertisement is subject to scrutiny. From a regulatory perspective, i.e. regarding the separation of advertising and content. From an economic perspective, i.e. looking at cyclical and structural shifts in advertising revenues. From a normative perspective, i.e. regarding critical approaches to advertisement and the audience commodity. The course aims to give a broad overview of the interconnection between media and advertisement, we are going to discuss current developments in advertisement and how media organizations react to opportunities and threats.
