In 2019 the Merriam-Webster dictionary declared the gender neutral pronoun “they” as the most important English word of the year. This demonstrates that the ideas and methodologies which emerged over the last 50 years from the field of gender studies are absolutely critical not only for current academic debates but also necessary for participating in contemporary culture.
This course introduces students to fundamental texts for gender studies and demonstrates their validity for art history through combining theoretical readings with selected case studies focusing on key modern and contemporary artists. Active learning will be encouraged through case-based problem assignments, small-group discussions and excursions. The objective of the class is to provide students with a foundation that will enable them to use concepts and methodologies of gender studies confidently in their future endeavours.
It will be a synchronous online class, utilising the platform webex. Assessment will be based on short, weekly assignments and a final paper. The seminar will be mainly held in English and encourages students to improve their academic language skills in a supportive environment. However, the assignments can also be written in German.
