Kommentar

Conceptual art originated in the 1960s and has been considered a game changer, producing a radically altered notion of the practice of art that no longer can be analyzed in conventional terms of expression, intention, style or medium. In this sense, the first generation of conceptual art has had a profound influence on the subsequent development of contemporary art (e.g. institutional critique, relational aesthetics, media art, performance art, “death of painting,” etc.) and the formulation of its critical framework (information theory, critical theory, post-colonial theory, gender theory, etc.). But conceptual art has also lead to a revision of the art historical past (e.g. Marcel Duchamp and the ready-made, photography, etc.). Indeed, it is difficult to make sense of much post-sixties art without a grasp of the varied legacy of conceptualist practices. Most importantly, however, we shall examine to what extent conceptualism is not, as often suggested, a purely New York phenomenon, but a movement that ‘global’ in its geographical extension and, moreover, enmeshed in the very cultural, economic and technological processes of globalization which emerged during the 1960s and after. To this purpose, student groups will be formed to research ‘conceptualist’ practices in various regions of the world (e.g. South America, USA and Canada, Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Japan, etc.). Course language: German and English. Schließen
