SoSe 21: PS-Surveying English Literatures: Shakespeare's Sonnets

William Shakespeare’s sonnets, first published in the 1609 quarto volume, rank among the most famous poems written in the English language. We will critically examine a selection of the 154 sonnets, discussing key themes ranging from love and beauty to time and mortality, and familiarise ourselves with their ideational, structural, and linguistic constructions. Additionally, we will not only get insights into the sonnets’ discursive interlacing of historical and cultural contexts but also gain more expertise in the systematic analysis and interpretation of poetry. If meeting on campus remains impossible due to the pandemic, this class will be taught live via WebEx and involves weekly assignments, including presentations of individual readings by students.
Students will need to obtain the following critical edition of Shakespeare’s sonnets: Shakespeare’s Sonnets, ed. Katherine Duncan-Jones (London: Bloomsbury, The Arden Shakespeare, 2010; ISBN: 9781408017975). Further course material will be made available at the beginning of the semester.
