Kommentar

This course will present an overview of the modern applications of electrochemistry, with an emphasis on energy conversion, energy storage, and sustainability.
Content
1. Electrochemistry in equilibrium and electrode kinetics
Review of basics from Module PC III: double layer model, Nernst equation, Butler-Volmer equation, Tafel slope, electrochemical cells
2. Electrochemical energy storage
Discussion of historical and modern battery systems, discussion of challenges and limits of battery technology, use of modern materials and concepts such as Li-O and Li-S, redox-flow batteries
3. Electrochemical energy conversion
Development of fuel cell technology, comparison of low-temperature systems (polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell - PEMFC, direct methanol fuel cell - DMFC) and high-temperature systems (solid oxide fuel cell - SOFC), development of water electrolyzers for hydrogen production, comparison of alkaline, proton exchange membrane, and solid oxide electrolyzers
4. Electrochemistry for sustainability Discussion of electrochemical approaches for conversion of carbon dioxide, wastewater treatment, solar energy harvesting (photoelectrochemistry, dye-sensitized solar cells) 5. Advanced research methods
Methods for in situ investigation of electrochemical systems (impedance, X-ray, and infrared spectroscopy; electrochemical mass spectrometry)
