WHAT IS THIS COURSE ABOUT
The workshop attempts to reconsider the terms “conflict” and “diversity” in relation to non-human beings. How could we study more-than-human collectives (as opposed to human-only societies) and challenge some of our core values such as democracy, growth, equality, fairness, diversity, nation states or even human rights. Such an endeavour would have serious political and ethical implications. It would undermine the assumptions of our current economy and challenge bureaucratic-technocratic apparatuses. But a fair warning: We will go way beyond the dictum of “animals are our equals”. Our question will rather be the following: How can we attend to beings (not only animals) with unequal skills and asymmetric capabilities? What type of collectives and political actions would that require? Equality would not be a satisfactory answer, nor is democracy or human rights.
This is a vital question, because we are at the verge of an ecological crisis and this course provides an assessment of where we are at the moment. We will examine a variety of fields from agricultural policies to urbanisation, from companion animals to rapid decimation of biodiversity. The overall aim is to enhance our view of what conflict and diversity might mean in a larger context.
