Kommentar
Sociology is often (mis)understood as an ahistorical discipline focusing solely on contemporary social problems. Such a view ignores the fact that the past echoes in complex ways in the present. These echoes become apparent when we consider how societies struggle to come to terms with violent and traumatic histories of social injustice, as illustrated by the contested memories of colonialism and the Atlantic slave trade. Besides exploring classical and contemporary theoretical contributions at the crossroads of sociology and memory studies, this course focuses on the ways in which specific, globally entangled histories are repressed and remembered in different social, spatial and political contexts.
