SoSe 21: Modern Men: Modes of Masculinity in Modernist Prose
Birte Wege
Kommentar
What does it mean to be a ‘modern’ man? A modern ‘man’? In what ways were traditional gender roles shifting in the early twentieth century, and how did American literature engage with these changes? How did some of the key authors of American modernism negotiate modes of masculinity, in particular, in their prose writing? Beyond dominant images centered on white, heterosexual masculinity, what are some of the ways in which issues of race, and/or of queerness, were explored in this context in the literature of the time?
These are some of the guiding questions for this seminar. To answer them, we will analyze short stories and novels by authors including Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Langston Hughes, Jean Toomer, Djuna Barnes, and others, combined with readings on modernist literature more broadly, as well as introductory texts from gender- and queer studies.
