SoSe 21: Health Care Systems in European Comparison

Issues of illness and the restoration of health are existential components of human life and social coexistence. Treatment of illness is always spatially, temporally and socially situated, and accordingly the way in which it is socially structured and organized varies from society to society. It also differs considerably between EU Member States though they all share the common goal of delivering efficient, equal and high quality health services at affordable cost. Particularly under the current pandemic conditions, topics such as medical knowledge and practice, the political control of health care systems, their financial and personnel resources, but also the sometimes contradictory demands on health care systems from an ethical, legal or economic point of view, become particularly visible and are hotly debated in the general public.
The course aims at introducing this variety of issues related to health care systems in a comparative perspective. It addresses medical, organizational, political, economic as well as legal aspects of health care systems based on different theoretical as well as methodological perspectives.
