SoSe 21: Social Origins Inequality: Skills and Personality
Lea Kröger
Kommentar
This seminar will examine how the family of origin generates and shapes non-cognitive skills and personality. Personality and skills critically determine individuals' decisions during their life course and their success in many areas of life. Because of recent labor market trends like a shift towards automation, these skills have become increasingly important in explaining social inequality. Previous research on skill formation has shown the role of intergenerational transmission of parental skills and personality to their children and the influence of parental resources in the development of skills. Thus, social origin plays an important role in the explanation of differences in personality and skill levels. In this seminar, we will examine these intergenerational processes of skill and personality generation and the role of skills in the wider generation of social inequality. We will discuss theoretical literature on how personality is formed during the early life course stages and read empirical studies from sociology, social psychology, and behavioral economics on different skill dimensions, like grit, conscientiousness, or locus of control and their effect on status attainment.
