SoSe 21: Nationalism and regional movements in Europe: Historical traits and current developments

More recent political events and developments have shown that idea of a strong nation and nationalist tendencies are highly appealing despite intensified international cooperation, Europeanization, and transnationalization. Some commentators even see a strong correlation between transnationalization/globalization and the rise of new protectionist sentiments, new nationalist tendencies, but also a significant rise of regional mobilization. This tension of growing transnationalization on the one hand and new tendencies of re-nationalization/re-regionalization in contemporary Europe is in the centre of attention during this seminar.
Hence, we will read major sociological and historical studies on nationalism and nation-building in modern European history to learn major concepts, notions, and paradigms of classical nationalism studies. Against this backdrop, we will discuss different paths and models of nation-building in comparative perspective. Beyond that, we will also investigate more recent studies on nationalism and nation-building (u.a. Wimmer, Brubaker) to understand current logics of nationalism and the fundamental socio-economic, historical, and cultural conditions of contemporary national and regional movements. Moreover, we will also investigate current developments and case studies.
