In this class we will discuss a number of seminal studies dealing with linguistic variation and change, with a focus on the three waves of variation studies starting with the Labovian tradition from the 1960s up to more recent approaches. As a foundation we will also look at more general concepts and issues in basic concepts in sociolinguistics and touch upon diverse fields such as standardization, multilingualism, dialectology, pragmatics and the relationship of language and culture.
