SoSe 21: MÜ-Studying the Present Moment: Affect Theory

The course will offer an introduction to Affect Theory and the Study of Emotions, which have emerged, in the last few years, as a focus of critical concern in a large number of disciplines. We will clarify the terminology and discuss the differences between affect, passion, emotion, and feeling. In our discussion and comparison of various approaches to theorizing affect we will address the following questions: How is affect gendered? Is it a human universal or historically / culturally specific? What is the relationship between affect and cognition? What role does the body play? How are individuals and affective communities interrelated? How is affect represented and performed in art? How is affect functionalized in contemporary culture and politics? Our discussions of theoretical texts will be complemented with and related to select case studies.
All texts will be made available on Blackboard.
Assessment will be on the basis of regular attendance and active participation in classroom activities, including e.g. short presentations and response papers.
The course will be taught via WebEx video meetings. Details on the organization of the course as well as the meeting information will be posted on Blackboard in the first week of April.
