SoSe 21: Urban governance and social worlds in China’s cities
Elena Meyer-Clement
Kommentar
Dense communication flows and networks make the city a space, where new social worlds are created and existing social worlds evolve at particular speed. In this seminar, the team of a new research project on Worldmaking in Chinese Cities, together with the participants, explores these processes from different angels. We introduce and discuss the structural perspective that emphasizes the strong role of party-state actors in urban development and urban governance, and we explore bottom-up dynamics by different social groups that create and fight for new spaces and recognition.
The seminar is divided into three parts. The first part will be based on readings and discussion of academic literature introducing some of the basic structures, mechanisms and actors in urban governance and their relations to social groups. For the second part, we invite writers, artists, and filmmakers from China to show their work and speak with them about their take on the struggles of individual social groups in China’s cities. The third part will be dedicated to student presentations of selected case studies.
