This course will consist of an introduction to the major authors and debates in the history of European modern art (ca. 1850-1940). Although the proseminar will touch upon some of the most canonical moments of modern art (e.g., Impressionism, Symbolism, Russian Constructivism, Dada and Surrealism), it is not a survey of modern art in the strictest sense. Rather, the proseminar is designed to lay the basis for your further studies and will introduce you to a basic set of texts that have helped shape and transform our discipline since the mid-20th century. We will read classical and more recent texts by art historians, critics and theoreticians, such as, T. J. Clark, Clement Greenberg, Rosalind Krauss, Griselda Pollock, as well as discuss such central concepts as modernism, avant-garde, primitivism, (post-)colonialism, formalism, and gender. Each session will focus on a particular critical method in relation to a specific work of art. The students will be required to actively participate in the discussions and will be assigned a text to present in class. Schließen
