SoSe 21: Exchange by correspondence: better writing skills
Daniel Louis Nethery
Kommentar
Subject: In this course you will correspond with students from around the world on your experience of the pandemic and your perspective on some of the issues which it raises.
Program: Each week you will write a one-page letter on a topic ranging from the wearing of masks and online learning to the roll-out of vaccinations and globalisation. You will be encouraged to approach these letters as a mix of exercises in personal reflection, creative writing, informative journalism and academic debate. At the end of each week, you will submit your letter for anonymous review and receive for review a letter from an anonymous correspondent. After the halfway point of the semester, you will also have the option of working towards a 2000-word piece of writing by submitting 500 words for review every second week. By the end of the course, you will have engaged with a unique range of perspectives on the pandemic, and you will have improved your own writing skills by helping others to improve theirs.
Is this course right for me? This course requires you to submit written work every week. You will have the opportunity to meet other correspondents, but there will be no regular meetings. The course is open to students in the humanities, social sciences and cultural studies. There are no prerequisites.
Workload and assessment: To qualify for 5 ECTS points you will need to write and constructively review at least 3600 words and submit a 2000-words portfolio or piece of writing.
