Learner-centred approaches in ELT. Schwerpunkt: Gym/ISS/GS
English Language Teaching and the (Post)-Colonial - Film, Literature, and Music
Music, literature, and film play(ed) a vital role in decolonising people’s minds and hearts as well as promoting anti-colonial resistance. Taking this as a starting point, the aim of this seminar is to explore some trends in post-colonial popular culture and discuss the potential of those texts for the English as a foreign language classroom. The first part of the seminar focuses on post-colonial theory, including, among others, Edward Said’s celebrated book Orientalism (1978). We then move on to examples of post-colonial texts which portray socio-cultural identities and a group’s or nation’s responses to post-colonial relationships. Approaches to dealing with post-colonial texts in the EFL classroom form an integral part of this class.
