If we spoke a different language, we would perceice a somewhat different world. – Towards a plurilingual approach in ELT.
Plurilingualism and pluriculturalism as power tools to bring people closer together. According to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, plurilingualism refers to an individual’s experience of language(s) in its cultural contexts, including, for example, the language(s) of the home and dominant languages in society. The aim of this class is to look at selected concepts of plurilingualism as well as at how plurilingual competence can be promoted in the EFL classroom. In order to do so, we will discuss current principles in ELT, including, among others, lifelong learning, learner autonomy, and action-oriented approaches and explore their potential for promoting a plurilingual learning culture. This class is project-based, allowing participants to explore examples of plurilingual texts, including, for example, songs as well as literary and digital texts and their potential ‘value’ for the plurilingual classroom.
