‘Reading’ a play is often considered to be a secondary approach only to theatrical productions. Nevertheless, it is an important first step in finding out what a play is supposed to be ‘about’. Accordingly, the seminar will undertake a close reading of Shakespeare’s King Lear. Participants are expected to have acquired (and read) the play in the Arden 3 edition (ed. R.A. Foakes) by the beginning of the semester; preparatory reading might be either one of the current Cambridge Companions to Shakespeare Studies or the German Shakespeare-Handbuch (ed. Ina Schabert).
