SoSe 21: Multilateralism in Crisis
Lora Anne Viola
Kommentar
Multilateralism is the most prominent and perhaps one of the most successful methods for global governance. Although multilateralism has been one of the core characteristics of the modern international system since the end of WWII, it appears to be increasingly under pressure. Calls for decoupling, deglobalization, and the delegitimization of multilateral international organizations in favor of political and economic nationalism seem to be gaining ground. In addition, we have recently seen prominent cases of US withdrawal from international agreements and organizations, such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the WHO, UNESCO, the ICC, along with a more general debate about US security, economic, and political commitments abroad. This course investigates these developments in contemporary and historical comparison. It asks whether multilateralism is in crisis, whether this moment is different from past moments, what kind of crisis it might be, along with what causes and responses can be identified. Schließen
