SoSe 21: Introduction to Medical Anthropology
Marcos Freire de Andrade Neves
Kommentar
Perceptions, experiences, and practices related to illness, healing and health are culturally shaped and at the same time embedded in economic and socio-political relationships. This course introduces basic texts and concepts of medical anthropology, discussing its various facets such as interpretive medical anthropology, critical medical anthropology, and feminist medical anthropology. Through the reading of ethnographies, we will also explore key concepts such as body, disease, health, healing, biomedicine, medicalization, life, and death, and how they acquire specific meanings in different social and cultural contexts. Finally, we will look at the contemporary challenges facing medical anthropology, such as epidemics.
