The subject of this seminar is the institutional, socio-historical and cultural-historical context of translations and translation movements in the Arab world (from the Abbasid period to the Nahda and modern times) - but also the translations themselves. The focus is on translations into Arabic, but also the reception of Arabic translations in Europe will be considered. Why, where, by whom, how and what was translated? What role do these translations play in Arabic literature and the history of knowledge? What is its cultural and historical significance as a bridge between Arab and European cultures? close
